Nivea's racist advertisement

Sometimes a company goes too far with their advertisement and it causes a lot of controversy among a lot of people. This was the case with the advertisement shown above, created and published by Nivea.

In the advertisement you see an Afro-American male who promotes shaving products. The slogan is Re-Civilize yourself. It also says: Look like you give a damn.

A lot of people thought this advertisement was offensive and racist. They thought that the advertisement tried to say that the Rasta hair was uncivilized, while that is their natural hair.

Eventually Nivea apologized and the campaign was withdrawn. I think it is very good that they were willing to admit the advertisement might have been offensive to people. This way they limited the damage that the advertisement caused to their brand. Maybe not everyone thought the same about it, and personally I don’t even know what to think because they have the same advertisement with a white guy, but they chose the safe route by taking down the campaign.
